Sewing Rediscovered: My Return to the Sewing Machine

This post will be much shorter than the last one, I promise! I’ve been a bit behind on posting, so I wanted to share a quick update about my weekend adventure while being snowed in—my self-taught return to the sewing machine!

A few years ago, I made two quilts incorporating pieces of my grandpa’s jacket for my grandma and mom. Since then, I’ve made a few pillow covers, but my sewing machine has mostly just been collecting dust. Well, this weekend, I decided to dust it off, set up a cozy little ‘sewing nook’ in my room, and start teaching myself how to sew again! I’ll admit, I was a bit rusty, so YouTube videos became my best friend.

Here are a few reasons why I decided to jump back into sewing:

  • It Requires Presence and Focus: Sewing demands my full attention, which means I’m less likely to get caught up in work stress or the chaos of everyday life. It’s a great way to slow down and be present.

  • It Sparks Creativity: Sewing allows me to engage my brain in a way that’s outside my usual routine. It’s challenging, but I love how it pushes me to think creatively. Even when it’s frustrating, I know it’s good for my mental health and well-being.

  • I Can Repurpose Old Items: Some of the items in my closet were too worn to donate, but still in decent condition. Thanks to a few helpful sewing tutorials, I’m learning how to repurpose these old clothes into useful items like farmers market bags—helping reduce waste and giving new life to things that would otherwise be thrown away.

  • It Will Save Money in the Long Run: I often buy items online that could easily be made at home with a sewing machine and some basic materials. My lack of sewing skills has always held me back, but I’m hopeful that by building these skills, I’ll save money over time.

Overall, I’m just so grateful for this pause that’s allowing me to pick up new hobbies, build skills, and try something new. It’s been a challenging yet exciting experience!

If you’ve picked up any new hobbies recently, I’d love to hear about them! Feel free to comment below or share on social media. I’d love to learn from you as well!
